National Seminar 2018 “Teaching and Research on Foreign Languages, Linguistics and International Studies in Vietnam”

The national seminar 2018 “Teaching and Research on Foreign Languages, Linguistics and International Studies” took place at the University of Languages and International Studies – Vietnam National University, Hanoi (ULIS – VNU) on April 10th, 2018. This is the annual activity held by three universities of foreign languages: ULIS – VNU, University of Foreign Languages Studies – The University of Da Nang and College of Foreign Languages – Hue University.

The seminar was attended by representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam, the National Foreign Language Project 2020 and VNU. Delegates from three universities of foreign languages, representatives of the leadership from partner universities, institutes, training and research units also participated in this event.

In his opening remark, ULIS’s President, Dr. Do Tuan Minh delightedly informed all participants that this annual event increasingly attracted the interest of teachers and scientists throughout the country. The organizing committee has received 130 reports, 72 of which were chosen to be printed in the full seminar’s Proceeding while some have been edited to be published in the Journal of Foreign Studies. On behalf of the organizing committee, the President expressed his gratitude towards the interest, support and enthusiasm of all scientists, teachers and researchers.

Addressing at the seminar, Ms. Molly Stephenson – Counselor for Culture and Information of the U.S Embassy in Vietnam, considered foreign languages, especially English as an effective tool for every country to develop, connect and cooperate with other ones. As an educator, she believed that language competency could open up new frontiers, promising learners a brighter and more successful future. In addition to efforts of learners, the role of instructors and teachers is vital and has a long-term influence. Therefore, she spoke highly of ULIS for the idea of organizing this annual seminar and believed that it would create an open forum for teachers as well as researchers to share and gain experience and ceaselessly improve the quality of the teaching activities.

Notably, this seminar was attended by Prof. William Peter Grabe from the University of Northern Arizona (USA) with a keynote report in the plenary session. His report “The conceptual basis to research the teaching of second language reading comprehension” emphasized the viewpoint that to improve the reading skill, students need to actively and systematically practice by themselves besides studying with the stewardship of qualified coaches.

The report “Terminology Research: A Post-structural Approach” of Assoc. Prof. Le Hung Tien presented a new perspective on terminologies in the current social and linguistic context and the study of post-structural terminologies. At the same time, the report also touched upon some suggestions for the research on bilingual and multilingual terminologies and terminology management and planning in Vietnam.

The report “Research and international publishing support for lecturers of the University of Languages and International Studies – Vietnam National University, Hanoi” of Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Quynh was also paid great attention at the plenary session. Based on lecturers’ difficulties in conducting independent researches and international publishing, the report suggested collective solutions in order to assist ULIS’s lecturers as well as young lecturers in other training units.

After the plenary session, all participants listened to reports and shared opinions at 16 subcommittees. More than 70 reports were presented at the subcommittees. Each report showed unique research findings, new perspectives, experiences, dedication and renovating research ideas in some fields such as linguistics, international studies, language education and others.

At the closing session, Heads of the subcommittees had positive comments on presentations and discussions. The reports’ quality was not only reflected in the reporting but also in the heated discussion afterwards.

The national seminar 2018 of “Teaching and Research on Foreign Languages, Linguistics and International Studies” has attracted about 600 participants. Addressing at the closing session, Vice President Ngo Minh Thuy expressed her gratitude toward all participants and hoped that the seminar next year would continue to receive the support and interest of many scientists.
