Welcoming messages for the 2018-2019 academic year: All for the big family, ULIS

Since August 13th, 2018, a lot of hectic activities have taken place at the University of Languages ​​and International Studies – Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU – ULIS) to welcome the 2018-2019 academic year and new Ulisers as well,  from which many of the speeches left impressive and memorable messages.

ULIS Media would like to cite all these messages here in an ebullient atmosphere of welcoming a new academic year across the country.

Attending the political meeting and new school year gathering (opening activity of the Integration Week in the 2018-2019 academic year), which was held in Nguyen Van Dao Hall from 13th to 14th of August, President Do Tuan Minh in a violet T-shirt with the ULIS trademark, created a warm and friendly atmosphere by sharing his own memories on his registration day at ULIS 30 years ago. He led freshmen through different emotions from excitement to sympathy. He hoped that no matter how first year students would become Ulisers whether ULIS was their “love at first sight” or were admitted to ULIS at the first recruitment or second recruitment, please! Treasure every single minute of life. “Please! Live kindly, freely and happily. Live with your own interests and abilities to please yourselves”. He also stated that the university would consistently accompany and share with students along this journey.

Also at the event, the Chairman of the Development and Cooperation Advisory Council, Mr. Nguyen Lan Trung described “youth and teenagehood” as “Red Flower Period”, which is the single most beautiful time. He wished the students to enjoy those years. Performing the song “The simple thing” composed by musician Phu Quang, Assoc. Prof. Dr.  Nguyen Lan Trung again showed an extremely close and simple image of ULIS’s teachers. The verse of this song was converted to “Ngoai ngu oi! Dung bao gio cach xa, mai mai dieu ki la ULIS chung ta”, which can be closely translated to “ULIS! Let us never be far away, let us forever be the ULIS’s mystery” echoed across the hall and acted as an “invisible magnet” pulling all new students and teachers closer together.

“Destiny” was the first word that the Director of Academic Affairs Office – Ms. Ha Le Kim Anh, delivered in her message during the meeting with QH.2018.F1 students. She shared to all new students that “There will be many opportunities opened up to new students over the course of your lives, it will be your destiny that you should wholeheartedly embrace. With your highest spirit, try your best to overcome the difficulties in study. Live a life filled with love so that you won’t regret having lived your youth”.

Addressing at the opening ceremonies, the Vice President Ngo Minh Thuy, also a ULIS’s alumni, shared about the Plan for the 2018-2019 academic year with six key tasks. As an experienced person, the Vice President gave many pieces of useful advice to new students to actively participate in scientific researches and expand their learning opportunities. Taking the case of the Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam, Mr. Le Minh Hung – Alumni of K22 intake of the Faculty of French Language and Culture as an example, Vice President Ngo Minh Thuy affirmed great career opportunities for ULIS’s students, not only in the fields of teaching, translation or interpreting. With the promotion of student support, development, cooperation, science and technology of the university so far, she hoped that students would not passively wait for everything, but “create opportunities together”, especially in a global integration era where learning foreign languages has never been as crucial as today.

Addressing at the opening ceremonies on behalf of the Board of Management, Mr. Lam Quang Dong – ULIS’s Vice President, encouraged new students to strive for their study, gain knowledge and skills as well as personal experiences to be ready to meet the job requirements after graduation and target glories. He also encouraged both teachers and students to actively take part in research activities.

Among the speeches at opening ceremonies, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Long – ULIS’s Vice President put his emphasis on the plan of the university’s 2018-2019 academic year as well as six key tasks. He also gave all the students some advice: Proactively study and “Study hard”; Participate in clubs’ activities to “Play hard”; Acquire practical experiences through part-time jobs and internships; Enjoy youth and love with all your heart and mind; and lastly, the good news is that all of 210 classrooms will be installed with air-conditioners to welcome students in this new academic year.

In the 2018-2019 academic year, the Faculty of Korean Language and Culture has 210 students. Addressing at the opening ceremony of the faculty, Dr. Tran Thi Huong, on behalf of 30 faculty’s teachers, has congratulated outstanding QH.2018 students on passing a number of candidates to become a student of the faculty. “This year, the Faculty of Korean Language and Culture again leads the entire school, even the entire country, in the entry-qualified marks of foreign language universities. This is a great honor which demonstrates that the faculty’s training quality has been recognized by the society. The position of the faculty and university is increasingly enhanced. We pledge our commitment to the Korean language, our love of Korea and our people, throughout the 24 years of building and developing our Korean language. Our teachers will try their best to offer students a lot more exciting and vocational programs. At present, we have over 1500 graduates working in leading government agencies, organizations and enterprises within the country and abroad. I hope that all students who have chosen to  learn the Korean language at ULIS will promote at the highest level tradition, core values, creativity and solidarity, especially the unique Korean style of ULIS” said Dean of the Faculty of Korea Language and Culture.

In the 2018-2019 academic year, the Division of Arabic Language and Culture received 26 students. In her welcoming speech for this new academic year, Ms. Le Thi Khuyen – Vice Dean of the Division of Arabic Language and Culture congratulated all the new students who have chosen Arabic as a language to achieve their dreams and hopes for the future. “I know many of you here were hesitant when choosing Arabic language in your application form and even some of you may still wonder whether this is the right decision or not. However, eventually, you chose to be a member of this division to therefore learn a new language and to experience a diverse and unique culture. Despite many difficulties, I hope you will always stick to your choice. Arabic is a new language in Vietnam, which has not been prevalent to learners, but this also means that you are likely to have more opportunities in the future. You may have heard about this famous saying ‘If you want something you have never had, you must be willing to do something you have never done.’ So be proud of the language that you chose”, shared by Ms. Le Thi Khuyen.

Addressing at the opening ceremony of the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture, Dean Pham Minh Tien expressed his hopes of a new academic year with full of joy, fortune, health and achievements to all students of the Faculty. Mr. Pham Minh Tien affirmed that with a number of the most qualified lecturers in Vietnam, the Faculty will create a beneficial environment for students to study and better themselves.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, the Dean of Faculty of German Language and Culture – Mr. Le Hoai An expressed his gratitude to 106 students for choosing German as their major. “That is the right decision because our university will train and take care of you with high sense of responsibility. During your study time here, you will not only learn a new language, but you will also have a chance to dig deep into the long-lasting culture and understand more about German people as well”, he confirmed.

In the 2018-2019 academic year, the Faculty of Russian Language and Culture received 62 students majoring in Russian Language and Russian Language Teacher Education. In her welcoming speech, Dr. Dinh Thi Thu Huyen expressed her gratitude towards all the students for choosing Russian Faculty, where you will be more mature and have good friends and teachers. Dr. Dinh Thi Thu Huyen hoped that the faculty’s pride would be passed down to the freshmen so that they could live and learn with all their hearts.

In the 2018-2019 academic year, the Faculty of French Language and Culture received 99 students majoring in French Language and 23 students majoring in French Language Teacher Education. In his welcoming speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Hong Van congratulated students on their wise choice of studying French at ULIS. “The French will make you different. While there are some languages tending to likely become the global language, French has always been one of the official languages ​​used in international relations.  In particular, in Vietnamese labor market, recently, the process of international integration has led to the growing demand for French-speaking human resources. The presence of enterprises in today’s ceremony is a testament to this”. He also announced the opening of the 2018-2019 academic year with the theme: “the Faculty of French Language and Culture makes changes to overcome challenges”.

In his opening speech, Dr. Vu Hai Ha – Dean of the Faculty of English Language Teacher Education extended his congratulations to freshmen of the faculty for “Becoming freshmen; having the smartest choice; being students of a special academic year – The 60th intake of the faculty”. He shared information about necessary knowledge, skills and qualities for students as well as aspects around “Self-management”.

Speaking at the meeting of freshmen of honour programs in accordance with Circular No. 23, President Do Tuan Minh said that the freshmen of honour programs were extremely special when being the first students of these training programs. President Minh also expressed his joy because the entry-qualified marks and interest of parents, students are the starting points of a successful academic year of honour programs. In these programs, students will experience “the most optimal, advanced and pro-learner things” included in the training programs.  The university guarantees to train the students so that they will acquire 6 sets of skills and 6 outstanding benefits, as having been promoted. President Do Tuan Minh also mentioned the university’s intention to build a “CLC Kingdom” (honour program Kingdom), a private space for freshmen from honour classes to build “their own kingdom”. Furthermore, in the upcoming time, the university will also develop honour training programs and enroll students for these programs in accordance with Circular No. 23 in majors such as English, French, German and Arabic Language.

After entering ULIS, the freshmen started their first experience at the university with orientation activities, political study, club day…

Sharing her thought about ULIS, the new student Quan Thi Ngoc Bich, who is also the 2018 valedictorian of the university, says “I am really happy as this university has already given me so many precious things, at the first few moments when I am here. I feel so lucky that I chose ULIS.”

“I feel very happy to be the student with highest entrance mark of the Division of Arabic Language and Culture. I believe that this title, as a material and spiritual pedal, will motivate me to learn this language no matter how hard it could be. Following this major will allow me to complete the journey that my father has left behind,” said Do Thi Phuong, the valedictorian of the Division of Arabic Language and Culture, expressing her same feeling as Ngoc Bich’s.

Ma Lam Phuong, another top entrance scorer who studies at the honour program of the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture, shared an intriguing viewpoint. She said, “It would seem that I am destined to join ULIS and I feel very great to become a ULISer. Coming to ULIS, I do not feel strange at all; everything is very familiar and friendly. That makes me feel like I’m returning to my hearth. “

“I want to encourage students who aspire to enter honour classes in the Faculty of Japanese Language and Culture to be confident to nurture and pursue your dream, and then one day you will be able to become a student at one of the best language training institutions in Vietnam “, said Doan Thi Uyen, the valedictorian of the Faculty of Japanese Language  and Culture.

Extending her greetings to new K52 students, Dang Huyen Thu, Chairman of Student Association, confided: “On behalf of the Students Association of the University of Languages and International Studies, I wish new students of QH.2018 intake a good health to be able to firmly enter the university, have more success in your lives and many experiences during your four years at ULIS. I also hope that you will actively participate in activities of ULIS as well as the Youth Union – Students Association, otherwise you would regret your time at this university. One thing I draw from myself and want to tell you is that “You will never regret choosing ULIS for your youth!”

These messages represent the expectations and sentiments of more than 700 staff, lecturers and more than 4,000 students. These are good wishes for a successful academic year with many blazing victories of the great family ULIS, a sharing home of all ULIS-ers.
