10 remarkable events and achievements of University of Languages and International Studies in 2017
In 2017, University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS) – Vietnam National University (VNU) has had various activities and achieved significant accomplishments. The website proudly presents 10 outstanding events and achievements of ULIS this year:
1. The inauguration ceremony of the Center for Resources Development
On February 14, 2017, ULIS-VNU held the inauguration ceremony of the Center for resources Development, which was established by the Decision No. 2326/QD-DHNN issued on December 26, 2017 signed by the President of the University of Foreign Languages and International Studies – Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The Center will be focal advisory in advising the Governing Board to effectively use the school’s resources, as well as carrying out the tasks assigned by the President to optimize all resources to maintain, uphold, and upgrade facilities. After about one year of establishment, with professional staffs and service, the Center has been demonstrating its role in the process of exploiting facilities of the University.
2. The announcement ceremony of Foreign Studies Journal of ULIS – VNU and the publishing of the 1st Edition
On January 10, 2017, President Do Tuan Minh decided to establish Foreign Studies Journal of ULIS – VNU. On the occasion of the first edition, On March 16, 2017, ULIS solemnly held the announcement ceremony. Up to now, the Journal has published steadily 6 editions per year, 2 of which are English editions and the 4 others are written in Vietnamese ( the orientation in 2017 is to publish more English editions in the coming years)
In addition to the articles from the University’s officials, the journal also received many posts from off-campus officers from many units of the country, such as Vietnam Maritime University (VMU), Banking University Ho Chi Minh City (BUH), VNU International Francophone Institute (IFI), Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS), Foreign Trade University (FTU), Academy of Journalism and Communication (AJC), Institutes of Labour Market Studies, Vietnam General Confederation of Labour… The articles in the journal have been highly appreciated by critics in terms of content, research methods and new contribution to linguistics, language/foreign language education, international studies, in accordance with the mission and orientation of ULIS-VNU and the principles and aims of the Journal.
3. The first national scientific seminar for graduate students and post-graduate students (GRS 2017)
On August 11, 2017, University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS) held National scientific seminar for graduate and post-graduate students for the first time (GRS 2017) with a view to promoting research work among these students, creating a forum for academic exchanging which helps students have more opportunities to approach recent issues in language studying and prepare well for their learning process. This was also the first forum for graduate and post-graduate students in Viet Nam.
Almost 70 reports of graduate and post-graduate students from 16 universities nationwide were published in the Yearbook. Those reports can be recapitulated in two words: diversity in subjects and authors of the research, and innovation in different approaches and achievements, which made the quality of the seminar highly evaluated. It was also considered helpful and successful by a large number of teaching and researching staff, as well as graduate and post-graduate students nationwide.
4. Organizing ceremonies of departments.
In 2017, ULIS held various ceremonies of its departments such as 2017 Francophonie day and the 55th ceremony of Faculty of French Language and Culture (18/03/2017), Hangeul nal Festival and ULIS Korea Day 2017 (07-08/10/2017), the 20th ceremony of Center for Information technology, Communication and Learning Resources (09/11/2017) and the 25 years of teaching Japanese language at ULIS (11/11/2017).
5. The state-level, key scientific and technological subjects under the program “Science and technology for the sustainable development of the northwestern region” presided over by the University of Foreign Languages and International Studies, approved by the President of VNU and by the Chairman of the program
The state-level scientific and technological programs in the period of 2013 – 2018 “Science & technology for sustainable development in the northwestern region” are the concretization of the strategic guidelines of the Party and the State: Considering science and technology as the top national policy. “ Studying and modeling the improvement of foreign language skills for cadres and civil servants of customs, foreign affairs, tourism and border guards for the performance of official duties and services in the international integration trend in the Northwest “. This program is the largest state-level project so far that the University has successfully bid for, was approved by the President of VNU, the Program Director. The contract was signed on 30/10/2017.
The subject held the participation of scientific staffs, experts with many years of experience in organizing and managing training for different subjects both language-majoring learners and non-language-majoring ones with the purpose and the need to use a variety of foreign languages. Inheriting the achievements of the previous research, on the view of inheriting the values in the indigenous cultural treasure, to absorb the lessons learned from the project, the topic is a promising breakthrough in terms of effectiveness in building the English and Chinese language proficiency model that is appropriate to the practicality and particularly emphasizes the correctness and effectiveness in response to the demand of the use of officials and employees in the customs, foreign affairs, tourism and border guard in the practical implementation of services.
6. Change the High-school’s entrance exam and the teaching of the subjects security-defense and physical education at the Foreign Language Specialized School (FLSS)
In the entrance exam of the University of Foreign Languages and International Studies – Vietnam National University, Hanoi in 2017, the school renewed the enrollment method into Foreign Language Specialized School in the form of capacity assessment. Candidates have to pass a 1-day exam in 3 subjects: Foreign Language Assessment (2), Mathematics and Natural Science Assessment (1), Literature and Social Assessment (coefficient 1). This year’s competition has been very successful, attracting a lot of public attention. The test took place safely, in accordance with the regulations, there were no cases of candidates violating and disciplined. Test scores and test quality were assessed to be good.
In addition, the school also changed physical education into a club-based form of education and converted its National Defense-Security Education to a center of education at the National Defense-Security Education Center at VNU
7. Building new training programs
In 2017, the University has built and issued some new training programs such as Master Training Program (MTP) in International Education in German Linguistics between VNU University of Languages and International Studies (VNU-ULIS) and University of Leipzig; Federal Republic of Germany was approved by VNU based on Decision No. 1802/QĐ-ĐHQGHN on June 1, 2017; MTP in Korean Linguistics Studying was proclaimed by Decision No. 1885/QĐ-ĐHQGHN and MTP in Korean Linguistics Application was proclaimed by Decision No. 1887/QĐ-ĐHQGHN by VNU on June, 6, 2017; High-quality Bachelor Curriculum by Circular No. 23 of Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) in Japanese Linguistics; dual-degree training program in Japanese and Korean Linguistics for all students studying at VNU; dual-degree training program in English Linguistics for students studying at VNU University of Science (VNU-HUS), VNU University of Education (VNU-UED), VNU International School (VNU-IS).
8. Organizing training programs about university management for managers and professionals
In 2017, the University has built specialized training programs and university management for officials, leaders with a view to studying experience, creating opportunities for exchanges and learning in Chinese Taipei (from July 25 to 31, 2017 at Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages), in Japan (from November 21 to 29, 2017 at Hosei University, Kanto Gakuin University, Chiba University, Kyoto University of Foreign Studies with the support and cooperation of Vietnam Alumni Club in Japan) and in other countries. Even though it is the first time, this program attracts a great deal of attention from university officials.
9. Upgrading facilities and equipment, renovating landscapes, school campus, receiving and putting into operation the project of equipment enhancement for training and taking examinations.
Continuing the task of upgrading facilities and improving the landscape of the campus, in 2017, the university has executed and completed a number of works and projects such as the work of “Developing Foreign Language Specialized School”, the project “Strengthening the equipment for capacity assessment of University of Languages and International Studies – Vietnam National University, Hanoi (ULIS – VNU), ” Renovation the lavatory in A2 lecture hall – University of Languages and International Studies, “The installation of seat around the trees in the square A1 and in front of the Faculty of French Languages and Culture. The project was used and received a lot of positive feedback.
10. Completing tasks under the National Foreign Language Project 2020
