On March 30th, 2025, ULIS-VNU held the International Conference: Language, Media and Culture 2025 with the theme: “Crossing Borders: Language, Media & Transnational Cultural Flows”.

The conference was within the framework of UNiC 2025, leading to the 70th foundation anniversary of ULIS-VNU. This conference took place in a combination of in-person and online formats on the Meeting Zoom platform.

Opening the conference, Vice President Lam Quang Dong expressed gratitude to international scholars and guests for their attendance. Appreciating the role of this international conference in leading to the 70th foundation anniversary of ULIS-VNU and the efforts of Faculty of English Language and Culture in organizing the conference as well, Assoc Prof. Dr. Lam Quang Dong hoped that this conference would be a place for international scholars, researchers to share or express their perspectives of novel issues in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities, especially in Language, Intercultural Communication, Media and International Studies in the digital age.

In plenary session, Dr. Phan Ngoc Quynh Anh from University of Kent (The United Kingdom) had the key presentation “In-between our journeys: Thinking with space and imagination when thinking about the education-migration nexus”. The report focuses on new forms of mobility in the context of internationalized education for international students pursuing academic and international doctoral programs outside of national borders. The report offers a new perspective, emphasizing the practices of space-making, place-making and the construction of a sense of “home”, examined through the lens of a geographical critique of transnational experience, thereby opening up a space for dialogue to deepen understanding of the complexities surrounding migration planning. At the same time, the article also reports on the characteristics of the mobility phenomenon with the group of highly qualified migrants called “designed migrants” in academic research.

The roundtable discussion with the participation of Prof. Nguyen Hoa, Assoc Prof. Hisao I Hou (Taiwan), Dr. Phan Ngoc Quynh Anh, Dr. Nguyen Thu Giang and Dr. Phung Ha Thanh was chaired by Head of International Studies Department (Faculty of English Language and Culture) Nguyen Thanh Ha. The discussion focused on issues, fields, methods, and approaches in the context of transnational academia.

Ending the plenary session, the conference was divided into 6 panels including Media & International Studies; Language & Life; Social and Cultural issues and Foreign Language Education in the new age. The panels, with a total of 80 reports presented online, in person, and in posters from lecturers, teachers, students, and graduate students, brought new perspectives, opening up new directions in future research on Language, Culture, Media, and International Studies.
