The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) is one of the top faculties for foreign language education and linguistics studies at the graduate level in Vietnam. Originated from the Section of Graduate Studies Management founded in 1989 as a part of the Science Management Department with the Decision signed by the Chairman of the Ministerial Council (now the Prime Minister) assigning the ULIS (known at that time as College of Foreign Language Teacher Training) with the task to train language teachers and researchers at graduate level. FGS has now grown into one of the largest graduate faculties in foreign education and linguistics nation-wide. FGS is responsible for graduate training with Diploma, MA and PhD programs. The ULIS Diploma and MA in TESOL programs have produced thousands of graduates since their creation in 1992. FGS also had 2 MA training programs that were assessed according to ASEAN University Network - Quality Assurance standards: Master of Arts in English Linguistics Program in 2014 and Master of Arts in English Teaching Methodology (ETL) Program in 2016. The other Master of Arts in Chinese Linguistics program has been accredited as the peer quality assessment in accordance with MOET standards in 2017. Currently FGS has a Dean and a Vice Dean and a staff of 4 members. The teaching staff members are lecturers from other Faculties of ULIS, with some visiting lecturers from other Vietnam and overseas universities.

At present, FGS offers 11 MA programs and 8 PhD programs. In addition, a Post-Graduate Diploma in TESOL program has been offered since 2002 and 2 joint programs with international universities in the world: one with Southern New Hampshire University, USA (Master of Science in TEFL) launched in 2007 and the other with University of Leipzig - Federal Republic of Germany since 2017 in Master joint training program in German Linguistics and German as a Foreign Language and Second Language in the context of Vietnam-Germany.

ULIS Graduate Programs have an enrolment of about 150 MA learners and 15 PhD students each year. Currently, more than 500 learners are enrolled in the MA programs in 11 specializations, and 76 learners are studying in PhD programs in 8 specializations

Master of Science in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (joint program run by ULIS and Southern New Hampshire University)

ULIS currently delivers 01 Master of Science in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (MS-TEFL) program jointly run by ULIS and Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), the US.

I. Entry requirements
     Bachelor of Arts in English Linguistics or Bachelor of Arts in English Language Teaching.

II. Training time
     2 years

III. Program structure
     45 credits (27 credits awarded by ULIS in the first year; 18 credits awarded by SNHU in the second year, no MA thesis component)

IV. Tuition fee
     The tuition fee is subjected to change annually: The current first year fee is 27.400.000VND (≈US$1,208) and the second year fee is US$5,922 plus a graduation fee of $103.

German Language and teaching German as a foreign and second language in the Vietnam – Germany context

1. General information
The University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS), Vietnam National University (VNU), Hanoi currently delivers 1 Master of Arts (MA) programme in German Language” and “teaching German as a foreign and second language in the Vietnam – Germany context
The Master’s training international joint program between ULIS and Leipzig University aims to deliver an integrated Master’s program in order to generate internationally-qualified human resources. The program equips learners with necessary skills for conducting professional activities on a scientific basis, advanced expertise in German language, the cultures of German-speaking countries as well as German teaching methods and approaches essential for independent, scientific, and systematic research to develop creative thinking and responsible actions. The second objective of the program is to develop a contingent of teaching staff and training management staff as well as promote technology acquisition and transfer. Through the program, ULIS can also enhance its international cooperation, particularly with Leipzig University, thereby strengthening the position of the ULIS and VNU. The program was approved on June 1st, 2017. The annual enrolment scale is 10 students (5 students from each school).

2. Entry requirements
Bachelor of Arts in German Linguistics or relevant fields
Certificate of Vietnamese proficiency (level 4/6 in the Vietnamese Language Proficiency Framework) or Certificate of English proficiency (level 4/6 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)

3. Programme structure
65-75 credits including a 9-15 credit MA thesis

4. Training time
2 years of full time training with at least 18 consecutive months of taking taught components on campus
In certain circumstances, students can have 2 years of extension.

5. Tuition fee
The tuition fee for international students is subjected to change annually: The current tuition fee is 60.000.000VND per annum (US$2,518 approximately) plus a US$200 registration fee.
Visa fee: 135 USD/ year (as by Immigration Department - Ministry of Public Security, Vietnam)
Hostel fee: 40 USD/ student/ month (room of six) or 250 USD/ month (single room)
NOTE: Students will be assisted in getting a study visa (with multiple entries) on arrival at the International Airports and the tuition fee will have been paid before getting any visa assistance.

6. Scholarships
Annually, ULIS – VNU awards scholarships to international students registered in M.A./Ph.D. programs. The amount awarded can vary depending on the current financial aid policies of ULIS – VNU.
International M.A./PhD. students who have articles published in ISI and Scopus indexed journals during their study at ULIS-VNU are awarded 16,000,000 VND (sixteen million Vietnamese Dong) per article.

8.2. Each applicant should submit 01 set of documents (printed on A4-size paper) listed hereunder. Documents in languages other than English or Vietnamese must be attached with duly notarized translation into English or Vietnamese. The submitted documents will not, in any case, be returned to the applicants:
     1. Completed application form
     2. Copies and translation of degrees, diplomas and academic transcripts applicable for relevant levels of proposed study, duly notarized or certified by competent authorities of the sending country
     3. Medical examination certificate issued within 6 months from the date of application by competent health authorities of the sending country or by Vietnamese central, municipal or provincial medical bodies, clearly stating that the applicant is healthy and fit for overseas study
     4. Duly certified copies of Vietnamese Proficiency Certificates or internationally recognized certificate of the foreign language to be used for study in Vietnam (if any)
     5. Copies of financial guarantee to support study, research and living in Vietnam
     6. Duly certified copies of documents and certificates about the applicant’s aptitude, expertise, research achievements, ... (if any)
     7. Copy of passport with a validity of the expected duration of study in Vietnam or at least 1 year from the expected arrival in Vietnam

  1. Why do an M.A. in TESOL?

Global mobility and the spread of English as an international language has generated a huge worldwide demand for qualified language and ESOL teachers. The M.A. in TESOL is designed to equip Learners with a strong research-based foundation in languages education and with a suite of practical skills for functioning effectively as 21st-century language/ESL/EFL teachers. This is a taught Master, with independent research options available for suitable candidates.

Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand is an international leader in TESOL teacher education and in language learning and teaching research.   1. How do I apply?

The M.A. in TESOL is open to graduates with a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent qualification) in Linguistics, English Language, Education or a language other than English (or another relevant degree), and at least two years of relevant professional experience (e.g. as a language teacher) or other aspects of applied linguistics. For learners from non-English speaking backgrounds, the relevant Parties’ language proficiency requirements also apply (e.g. IELTS 6.5 overall with no sub-band below 6.0)

  1. Where will I study?

Learners can choose to study at ULIS in Vietnam through a combination of intensive and distance courses or on-campus in Wellington, or through a combination of intensive, distance, and on-campus courses.  

  1. How will I complete the MA in TESOL Program?

The M.A. in TESOL is a 180-point degree (twelve 15-point courses). Learners can complete the degree in a minimum of 12 months. ULIS learners who have successfully completed the ULIS Graduate Diploma at the Faculty of Graduate Studies will receive 60 points of credit towards the degree and take 8 rather than twelve 15-point courses.  

  1. What will it cost?

A learner with the ULIS Graduate Diploma will get a 20% fees scholarship when they enroll in the M.A. in TESOL. A learner with the Diploma will need to do 8 courses. In 2019 the full cost of one course is NZD2692. After the fees scholarship is applied, the cost is NZD2154.
