One Asia Convention Hanoi 2018: Asserting hope for the future of Asian Community

On the 3rd and 4th of August, 2018. , the international convention One Asia 2018 was taken place at Lotte Hotel, Hanoi with the theme “One Asia Convention Hanoi 2018 – Hope for the Future”. The convention was hosted by One Asia Foundation (OAF), sponsored and co-hosted by the University of Languages and International Studies – Vietnam National University, Hanoi (ULIS – VNU)

The convention was honored to receive Mr. Nguyen Sy Cuong – Vice Chairman of External Affairs Committee of the National Assembly (Vietnam), Mr. Ngo Van Quy – Vice Chairman of Hanoi Municipal People’s Committee (Vietnam), Mr. Yoji SATO –OAF’s president (Japan), Mr. Setsuzo TANAKA – Representative Director of ASCO (Japan), Mr. Nguyen Lan Dung – Professor of VNU. In particular, Mr. Al Gore – Former Vice President of the United States also attended as a keynote speaker at the convention

Regarding VNU, ULIS, The convention was attended by ULIS’s president Do Tuan Minh, Vice-president Ngo Minh Thuy, Vice-president Lam Quang Dong, Vice-president Nguyen Xuan Long, representatives of the university’s units, officers and lecturers. The convention was also attended by representatives from VNU, diplomatic departments, governmental agencies, Embassies of the countries, OAF and the universities.

Addressing at the convention, Dr. Do Tuan Minh – ULIS’s President said that One Asia Convention in Hanoi 2018 represented a positive hope for the future, a promising future of the Asian Community, a closely growing community on the basis of culture, society, economy and the common interests as well as the particularities of each nation on the continent. In order to connect the nations, languages is an integral part. As a university specializing in training and research foreign languagesfor more than 60 years, ULIS – VNU is wellaware of this. The act of selecting ULIS-VNU to collaborate and co-host the 8th convention demonstrated that OAF understood and shared its view on languages, researching and training languages, at the same time, asserting the university’s position.

Mr. Joji SATO – OAF’s chairman, asserted that the professors presenting at this convention had a lot of hope of the future, and thus gathering as a close-knit family. He also expressed his sincere thank for the cooperation of VNU, ULIS. The attempts of the lecturers and students would leave an indelible mark in the Foundation’s history

Mr. Nguyen Sy Cuong – Vice Chairman of External Affairs Committee of the National Assembly (Vietnam) expressed his pleasure as the topic of reports in this convention showed a variety of concerns from leaders, managers and scientists regarding various recent imperative issues such as solutions to adjust to climate changes, improvement in communication, development of science and technology and innovation in the context of 4.0 industrial revolution. Particularly, several reports mentioned opportunities as well as challenges to the future of Asian Community, in which relationship of culture, education,migration and workforce exchange among regional nations, overcoming and resolving differences in a spirit of cooperation, building, mutual benefit, etc. are the principles and targets that Vietnam is aiming for to maintain peace and stability, develop the country, strengthen solidarity, enhance international cooperation and integration, reinforce ASEAN Community, toward Asian Community in the future.

The One Asia Convention in Hanoi 2018 – Hope for the future has attracted more than 600 delegates from 300 universities in 31 Asian countries and other regions of the world such as Hanoi National University (Vietnam). Ajou University (Korea), Tadulako University (Indonesia), Teikyo Heisei University (Japan), St. Mary University (USA), University of Sheffield (United Kingdom), Changchun Medical College (ChangChun, Jilin Province, China), Bishkek Humanities University (Kyrgyzstan), Build Bright University (Cambodia) Sapienza University of Rome (Italy), …

The convention provides a forum for politicians, managers and scholars to share knowledge, ideas, experiences and best practices so as to deliver the purpose of the Foundation, which is the formation of Asian Community in the near future. The seminar covered a wide range of topics such as the course of Asian Community establishment, Politics, Economics, Environment, Social Matters, History, Education, Thougth, Philosophy, Religions, Culture, Arts, Media and other related issues. Speakers are world-renown politicians and scholars, including the Nobel prizewinners, who have bold vision and profound knowledge of similarities among countries in the region – one critical foundation for the establishment of Asian Community, as well as peculiarities of each nation which can benefit Asian Community in the near future. Topics covered in the convention also help identify strategic orientations and specific measures which will be cooperatively implemented by countries in the region, find out issues to be addressed so as to make significant contributions to the course of Asian Community formulation.

At the convention, the Former Vice president of the United State of America, Al Gore, presented referral report titled “The Climate Crisis and Its Solutions” in which he ocused on three main questions: “are we in need of change?”, “Can we change?”, and “Are we going to change?”. He shared problems related to current climate circumstance such as seriously affected, ozone escalated greenhouse effect and the process of global warming. This has resulted in alarming consequences such as storms, flood, heat increase, ice melting, increasing sea level, drought, forest fire, short of water, migration crisis due to climatic problems, etc. He also provided several solutions such as using renewable energy sources (wind, sun, ect); using mobile phones to free fixed telephone connectivity infrastructure, usingelectricity-based vehicles and new technology battery; closing factories utilizing coal for burning; enacting related cross-country commitment, etc.

In the speech with the topic “Hope for the future”, Mr. Setsuzo TANAKA – ASCO’s representative director (Japan), Mr.Youen KIM -Hanyang University’s professor (Korea), Mr.Nguyen Lan Dung – VNU’s professor, and Mr.Yoji SATO –OAF’s chairman (Japan) had in-depth discussion about social circumstances and Asia in general. Through the speeches, the speakers expressed their viewpoints on Asian countries were moving towards building a community of unity and prosperity

Other 31 speeches were presented in 4 subcommittee of the convention on August 4th, 2018. Some of the interesting topics were: Arousing Asian spirit in students: from short-term lectures to official subjects in the curriculum (Group author from Tadulako University),international integration – Vietnam Education’s opportunities and challenges (Ngo Minh Thuy), Comparison on seperation of gender imbalance in China and Japan (Zhang Kang-Si), Asia in the G20 (Hugo Dobson), etc. The delegates not only listened but also actively exchanged and debated, thus raising interaction in the convention.

One Asia Convention Hanoi 2018– Hope for the future is the 8th to be held and considered to be the most attracted up to date. This is alsoconsidered as the largest and the top-ranked international convention hosted by ULIS, VNU

One Asia Foundation is a non-governmental organization professing a commitment to the “development of a united, peaceful, prosperous Asia community. Throughout the years, OAF has financially supported for many educational institutions in order to raise awareness, support for students and teachers doing research on the subjects related to Asia and the world.
