Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-HN) raises to the 124th place in The QS University Rankings: Asia 2019
On October 23rd, 2018, the QS University Rankings: Asia launched the final ranking of 2019, in which VNU-HN has the highest place (124th place) among Vietnamese universities (up 15 places from 139th in 2018) and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) ranks the 144th.
The seven Vietnamese universities joining the ranking include VNU-HN (124th place), VNU-HCM (144th place), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (in the group of 261st – 270th place), Ton Duc Thang University (in the group of 291st – 300th place), Can Tho University (in the group of 351st – 400th place) and Hue University and Da Nang University (in the group of 451st – 500th place).
In terms of the ranking trend, VNU-HN has climbed 37 places since 2014 and always been at the highest position among Vietnamese universities in The QS University Rankings: Asia.
Besides 10 indicators as previous years (evaluation of employers and scientists, the ratio of lecturers to students, the number of lecturers with PhD degree; the number of articles and citations in accordance with the database of Scopus; international lecturers and students; Vietnamese and international exchanged students), QS has added 2 more new criteria to the QS University Rankings: Asia 2019 for the first time. The first one is the index of International Research Network accounting for 10%. This index is calculated based on the number and rate of scientific publications with co-author as international scholars on Scopus database system, thereby evaluating the number and diversity in internationalized studies. The other one is the survey on scholars and employers having changes in selecting and analyzing data with the number of participants increasing by 38% compared to the last year.
According to Prof. Nguyen Huu Duc- the Deputy Director of VNU-HN, VNU-HN has owned some indicators of the average level of Top 50 Asian universities and some well-ranked indicators including ones by employers, scientists; the number of international exchange students, international cooperation in researches (picture 1). Notably, the number of citations in scientific papers has exceeded the average level (Asia: 4,5 times/paper- VNU-HN: 5,1 times/ paper)
Ranked top 10 in the QS University Rankings: Asia 2019 are the universities of Singapore, China and Korea. The first place belongs to the National University of Singapore, followed by Hong Kong University, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIS), the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Seoul National University.
There are 498 universities in 17 countries ranked in Asia QS 2019.
China has 112 universities, three of which stand in top 10, followed by India (75 institutions) with the Bombay Institute of Technology Research ranked the 33rd. Hong Kong has 7 universities but 3 schools in the top 10.
Southeast Asia has 7 countries in the rankings, Singapore has only 3 universities but contributes two places in the top rankings: the National University of Singapore – the 1st place and Nanyang Technology University ranked the 3rd, Singapore Management University ranked the 78th. Malaysia has 26 universities with the University of Malaya (UM) at the 26th place. Indonesia has 22 institutions, the University of Indonesia at the 57th place. The Philippines has 8 institutions, the University of the Philippines at the 72nd place. Thailand has 19 campuses with Chulalongkorn University at the 44th place. Brunei has two universities, the University of Brunei Darussalam (UBD) at 100th place.
Previously, in June, 2018, QS World University Rankings announced the 2019 results. In accordance with the statistics, Vietnam National University in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have earned their reputation among top 1000 universities in the world. Although the ranking is quite humble, it can be considered as a sustainable integration of Vietnam universities. In 2013, only two national universities of Vietnam registered at 201+ group of the QS chart. After 5 years, VNU-HN surpassed 76 counterparts and 5 more Vietnam universities have had their names on the rankings.
QS World University Rankings is an annual university ranking chart, created by Education Organization Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) – UK. QS is highly rated as world’s most prestigious and influential ranking chart, along with other popular charts such as Times Higher Education (THE), Webometrics and ARWU of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
