Extended Conference “Developing Vietnamese Language and Culture major, with a Focus on Teaching Vietnamese as a Foreign Language”

On October 15th, 2024, ULIS-VNU held the extended conference “Developing Vietnamese Language and Culture major, with a Focus on Teaching Vietnamese as a Foreign Language”.

In her open speech, Vice President Ha Le Kim Anh expressed her deep gratitude to the professors, scientists, and students specializing in Vietnamese language and culture studies for their attendance. Affirming ULIS’s strengths in linguistics, cultural and international studies, Assoc. Prof. PhD. Ha Le Kim Anh hoped that Vietnamese Language and Culture major with a focus on teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language would be researched and ready for enrollment in 2025.

In the conference, Head of Training Department Nguyen Thuy Lan presented the report “Situation of teaching Vietnamese in Vietnam and around the world”. The report included the need for establishing this major, enrollment subjects, implementing directions and output standards. 

The report titled “Expectations for the Training Program and Learner Profile of the “Vietnamese Language and Culture major, with a Focus on Teaching Vietnamese as a Foreign Language”, presented by Head of Vietnamese Linguistics and Cultures Department Tran Huu Tri, provide an overview of key information of this major including training program, output standard and career opportunity. 

In the comment section, professors and scientists appreciated this major for its novelty. Despite advantages, several disadvantages were indicated by professors and scientists including credits, specialized knowledge, learner subjects,…. After that, a lot of solutions were proposed in order to improve the major. 

In the closing section, Chairman of School Board Do Tuan Minh summarized the mentioned comments of professors and scientists. Ph.D Do Tuan Minh expected specialized groups and training units would continue working on the development of this major, and welcome further comments and suggestions from professors and scientists to improve “Vietnamese Language and Culture major, with a Focus on Teaching Vietnamese as a Foreign Language”.
