Students of Japanese Language and Culture Explore Depth of Origami at ULIS
Hanoi, 2025 12th 2025 – The University of Languages and International Studies – VNU, Hanoi (ULIS–VNU) held an Origami experience session for students from the Faculty of Japanese Language and Culture at Vu Dinh Lien Hall. The extracurricular activity provided hands-on cultural immersion while fostering patience and creativity through traditional Japanese paper folding.

The workshop was led by origami expert Nguyen Viet Hung, renowned in Vietnam’s Origami community. His achievements include exhibiting works at Origami Zaragoza in Spain, earning third prize at the 2020 Japan Culture Contest (JCCI), and serving as head instructor of the Hanoi Origami Club. Hung introduced students to both the history and philosophy of Origami, highlighting its applications in contemporary fields such as robotics, medical devices, satellite engineering, and creative design

Under his guidance, participants practiced from basic models like cranes and boats to complex designs including dragons and lotus flowers. Vu Dinh Lien Hall came alive with colorful paper creations and focused student engagement. The event emphasized not just skill acquisition but also mindfulness—encouraging students to slow down, appreciate quiet moments, and derive joy from simple, intentional action.

More than just an artistic exercise, the workshop served as a space for reflection and mindfulness. Many students shared that Origami helped them slow down amidst their busy academic schedules and find calm in simple, intentional actions. “I realized that Origami is not just art—it’s healing,” said student Nguyen Thi Than Thuong. “It taught me to appreciate quiet moments and stay present in what I do.”

The Origami experience at ULIS concluded with students not only taking home intricately folded creations but also embracing newfound inner calm, creative inspiration, and an enriched understanding of Japanese cultural philosophy.
