Professional Training Workshop for Korean Language Lecturers and Teachers
On October 18, 2025, the University of Languages and International Studies – Vietnam National University (ULIS – VNU) organized a professional development workshop titled “Professional Training for Korean Language Lecturers and Teachers.” This event served as a prelude to the main seminar “Current Situation and Prospects of Korean Language Education in Primary and Secondary Educational Institutions in Vietnam.”

Attending the workshop, on behalf of ULIS, were Tran Thi Huong, Dean of the Faculty of Korean Language and Culture, and Nguyen Thuy Duong, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Korean Language and Culture.

As guest speakers, the workshop welcomed Dr. Nicola Fraschini from the Asia Institute, Korean Studies Department at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and Ms. Kim Hyunmi from the University of Melbourne — who has extensive experience in Korean language education research and development. The event also attracted the participation of teachers, lecturers, and students interested in the field.

During the session, Dr. Nicola Fraschini delivered a special lecture titled “The Status and Curriculum of Korean Language Education in Australian Schools.” He provided an overview of the current state of Korean language education at primary, secondary, and high schools in Australia. The lecturer also shared teaching experiences from Australian schools, highlighting key aspects such as the importance of language learning in building a multicultural society, multimodal communication methods, and flexibility in selecting topics and designing teaching materials.

Also during the workshop, MSc. Nguyen Ngoc Huyen presented a report titled “Key Points in Korean Language Testing and Assessment at the General Education Level in Vietnam.” The presentation outlined several issues related to language proficiency assessment and discussed essential points to consider. According to the presenter, the core goal of Korean language education is to develop students’ communicative competence. The report compared similarities and differences between the 2025 exam format and previous years. MSc. Nguyen Ngoc Huyen also emphasized the principles for developing competency-based assessments, which include two main processes: identifying the targeted competencies, and then selecting content and academic knowledge or skills that best reflect the chosen competencies and their indicators, along with cognitive levels.

The workshop concluded successfully with an interactive discussion among participants. This was an opportunity for teachers and lecturers to share experiences in Korean language education in both Australia and Vietnam, as well as to propose practical solutions for future improvements.
The workshop “Professional Training for Korean Language Lecturers and Teachers” marked the first step in preparing for the main seminar, which will officially take place in November this year.
