International Conference on Language, Media, and Culture: “Crossing Borders: Language, Media, and Transnational Cultural Flows”
Hosted by the Faculty of Linguistics and Cultures of English-Speaking Countries (FLCE),
University of Languages and International Studies, Vietnam National University, Hanoi

University of Languages and International Studies, VNU and The Faculty of Linguistics and Cultures of English-Speaking Countries (FLCE), are pleased to announce the 2025 International Conference on Language, Media, and Culture. Under the theme “Crossing Borders: Language, Media, and Transnational Cultural Flows”, this conference will explore the dynamic intersections of language, media, and cultural exchange in an increasingly interconnected world.
The conference features two distinct tracks to accommodate diverse areas of inquiry:
- Linguistics and Language Education
- Media and Cultural Studies
We invite submissions that address the conference theme within these tracks or examine related topics at the intersections of language, media, and culture.
Conference Tracks and Focus Areas
Track 1: Linguistics and Language Education
This track focuses on how language evolves, adapts, and functions across borders. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Language and identity in multicultural contexts
- Linguistic diversity and preservation
- Linguistic practices with implications for intercultural communication
- Linguistic innovation and globalization
- Multilingualism
- Cross-linguistic influences and cultural hybridization
- Translation, interpretation, and their roles in facilitating global communication
- Language education in the new era
- Linguistic landscapes around the world
Track 2: Media and Cultural Studies
This track examines how media and cultural flows shape identities, emotions, thoughts and foster transnational connections. Topics of interest include:
- Media and cross-cultural communication in the digital age
- Representation of diversity (or the lack thereof) in media
- National, international, and transnational media industries and cultural flows
- Digital media and its role in shaping identity and cultural practices
- Diverse and multicultural literature and films
- Postcolonialism and postcolonial studies
Submission Guidelines
We welcome submissions in the following categories. Authors are encouraged to indicate their preferred category and the selected track (Linguistics or Media & Cultural Studies) at the time of submission:
- Individual Paper (Poster or Oral Presentation; by a single author or multiple co-authors)
- Format: Individual submissions can be presented as a poster or an oral presentation.
- Submission Requirements: Submit an abstract of 250–300 words outlining the research question, methodology, and key findings. Include the full name, affiliation, and contact details of all authors. Identify up to 5 keywords for your paper. Indicate your preference for a poster or oral presentation in the submission.
- Panel
- Format: Panels bring together 3–4 papers on a shared theme to encourage a cohesive discussion.
- Submission Requirements: Submit a proposal that includes:
- A brief description of the panel’s overall theme (150–300 words). Identify up to 5 keywords for your panel.
- Individual abstracts for each paper (100–250 words each).
- Names, affiliations and contact information of all participants, including the panel chair.
- Roundtable
- Format: Roundtables are structured as discussions rather than paper presentations. They should focus on a central theme or set of questions and encourage audience engagement.
- Submission Requirements: Submit a proposal (150–300 words) that includes:
- The theme or central questions to be addressed.
- The intended structure of the discussion.
- Up to 5 keywords for your roundtable.
- Names, affiliations and contact information of up to 5 participants, including the chair.
Submissions must be in either English or Vietnamese and adhere to the word limits specified. All proposals should be submitted via the conference submission link (https://forms.gle/D5VxuV5fQPQtpFdZA) by 15 January, 2025.
Participation Fees (for non-ULIS delegates in Vietnam):
- Abstract review fee: 300,000 VND per submission
- Full paper review fee: 1,000,000 VND per submission
- In-person conference attendance fee: 300,000 VND per person (includes lunch and conference materials)
Submission and participation fees are exempt for ULIS staff and international presenters/participants.
Key Dates:
- Proposal Submission Deadline: 15 January, 2025
- Notification of Acceptance: 7 February, 2025
- Full Paper Submission Deadline (for those selected): 17 February, 2025
- Conference Date: 30th March 2025
Publication Opportunity:
Authors wishing to publish in the conference proceedings must submit their full-text papers by 17 February, 2025. Papers will undergo a review process, and revisions may be required. Only original, unpublished work will be accepted.
