Connecting Research and Academic Development in Foreign Language Education, Linguistics, and International Studies

On December 19, 2025, the University of Languages and International Studies – Vietnam National University, Hanoi (ULIS–VNU) organized the 2025 Postgraduate Thematic Workshop. The workshop aimed to create opportunities for doctoral candidates and master’s students to share and exchange research ideas in the fields of Foreign Language Education, Linguistics, and International Studies.

Attending the workshop on behalf of ULIS–VNU were Vice President Lam Quang Dong, Vice President Hoa Ngoc Son, representatives of university units, the Board of Deans and staff of the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature, along with a large number of doctoral candidates and postgraduate students.

The workshop also welcomed Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Minh from the University of Otago, New Zealand, as a distinguished guest speaker.

The workshop opened with parallel presentation sessions held across seven sub-panels organized by academic divisions and thematic groups of the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature. These sessions provided fresh academic perspectives for doctoral candidates and postgraduate students in key research areas that reflect the strengths of ULIS–VNU, including Foreign Language Education, Linguistics, and International Studies.

Following the parallel sessions, a plenary session was held. In his opening remarks, Vice President Lam Quang Dong expressed his sincere appreciation to all doctoral candidates and postgraduate students for their participation. Highlighting the workshop as an open academic forum that facilitates scholarly exchange and exploration of research directions, he expressed his hope that doctoral candidates would learn from one another, broaden their academic expertise, and meet the academic standards set by Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

Also speaking at the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Thi Thanh Nha, Dean of the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature, shared her pleasure that the Faculty had the honor of hosting the 2025 Postgraduate Thematic Workshop. Through this event, she hoped that doctoral candidates would actively engage in academic discussions, enhance their research capacity, and develop highly applicable research topics that contribute to the overall development of the University.

At the plenary session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Minh from the University of Otago (New Zealand) delivered a presentation entitled “Current Trends and Contemporary Issues in Second Language Pragmatics Research.” The presentation clearly analyzed the role and impact of pragmatic research when applied to the teaching of English as a second or foreign language.

The workshop took place in an open and dynamic atmosphere. It concluded with a souvenir presentation and a group photo session.
