International conference “Research and teaching of Japanese linguistics – An applied linguistic approach”

On October 11, 2025, ULIS – VNU held the international conference with the theme “Research and teaching of Japanese linguistics – An applied linguistic approach”. The conference was held in both in-person and online formats, and it served as an academic forum for scholars specialized in Japanese linguistics and education both nationwide and worldwide.

Opening the conference, Vice president Hoa Ngoc Son expressed his heartfelt thanks to distinguished guests for their participation in this conference. Affirming that the conference would play a crucial role in promoting the in-depth relationship between Vietnam and Japan in general, and education and research in particular, Dr. Hoa Ngoc Son believed that the conference would be a place for scholars to share new perspectives and discuss their concerns in relation to Japanese applied linguistics these days.

Delivering her speech at the conference, Chief of the Press and Culture section of the embassy of Japan in Vietnam Kanikawa Wakana acknowledged the contributions of ULIS – VNU in the development of Japanese language education and research. Highly appreciated the organization of the conference, she expressed her belief that participating scholars would gain valuable knowledge to apply in their future work, thereby contributing to building a strong Japanese language community.

Director of the Japan Foundation center for Cultural exchange in Vietnam Yoshioka Norihito emphasized that education and research were the core missions for the development of Japanese language education. He also expressed his hope that emphasizing the balance between training and research activities would contribute to the further development of the Japanese language education environment in Vietnam.

In the plenary session, Professor Kumiko Sakoda from Hiroshima University (Japan) presented her reports with the theme “From second language acquisition research to Japanese language teaching: Approaches through error analysis, Corpus studies, and the shadowing method”. Her presentation provided in-depth specialized knowledge and specific examples in relation to the theme. Professor Kumiko Sakoda also introduced the outcomes in the latest research and highly practical methodologies in Japanese language education with the aim to provide helpful solutions, which could be applied in research and education in Japanese linguistics in the upcoming time. The participants were also eager to ask questions and engage in discussions with Professor Kumiko Sakoda.

In an expert panel discussion on the topic “ AI – Opportunities and Challenges for Japanese language Teaching”, Chairwoman of the Association for Japanese Language studies and Teaching in Vietnamese Dao Thi Nga My and experts analyzed the advantages and drawbacks of AI in Japanese language education. At the same time, they proposed several teaching solutions to adapt to the impacts and changes of the digital era.

The conference also featured parallel subcommittee sessions. Specifically, subcommittee 1 included presentations on the topic “Japanese language teaching”, subcommittee 2 focused on “The application of AI in Japanese language teaching and acquisition”, and subcommittee 3 presented research on “Japanese linguistics”.

The international conference “Research and teaching of Japanese linguistics – An applied linguistic approach” concluded successfully after an active and productive working session. This event was not only an opportunity to look back on the development of Japanese linguistics in Vietnam, but also a valuable occasion for participants to exchange academic ideas, share research and teaching experiences, and contribute to promoting innovation in Japanese language education with an applied orientation in the context of globalization and digital transformation.
