UMS Leads the Way in Establishing English as a Second Language Model at ULIS
On May 28th, 2025, the Director of the Hanoi Department of Science and Technology signed a decision recognizing a list of scientific initiatives and research projects that demonstrated effectiveness, scalability, and city-wide impact in the first review phase of 2025. Among them was the initiative titled “Developing a School Model for Teaching, Learning, and Using English as a Second Language” by Ms. Nguyen Huyen Trang, Principal of ULIS Middle School (UMS), University of Languages and International Studies – VNU Hanoi (ULIS)

The model, implemented by UMS, aims to create a school environment where English is not merely a subject, but an integral part of daily academic and social activities. Its goal is to help students develop English proficiency comparable to that of a second language (ESL), aligning with current trends in global integration and educational internationalization.

Over time, UMS has taken the lead in promoting this model. The school has emphasized an enhanced English curriculum, integrating academic skill-based subjects, soft skills, and critical thinking – all delivered in English. In addition, extracurricular activities, English clubs, and cultural exchanges with international students have significantly contributed to creating an immersive English-speaking environment.

The city-level recognition of Ms. Nguyen Huyen Trang’s initiative affirms the early success and replicability of the model in other general education institutions with a focus on English intensification. It reflects a creative and context-appropriate approach to educational innovation and the development of global citizens. UMS remains committed to continuously refining and expanding its ESL model, offering practical, student-centered insights to the broader educational community in Vietnam.
