National Seminar 2017 of “Studying and teaching of foreign languages, languages and international studies in Vietnam”
In the process of implementing comprehensive reform and the tasks of the National Foreign Language 2020 Project, following the success of the previous seminars, in April 18th 2017, three universities of languages, ULIS-VNU, College of Foreign Languages-Hue University and University Of Foreign Language Studies – The University Of Da Nang held the National scientific seminar “Studying and teaching foreign languages, languages & international studies in Vietnam”.
The seminar was attended by nearly 500 members including researchers, scientists, educators, experts, scholars and teachers throughout the country.
The seminar was honored to welcome Prof. Nguyen Huu Duc, Vice president of VNU and directors of functional departments of VNU to attend and direct.
As delegates of the three co-hosting universities, there were Dr. Do Tuan Minh – President of University of Languages and International Studies – Vietnam National University, Hanoi (ULIS – VNU); Dr. Bao Kham – President of Hue College of Foreign Languages; Dr. Tran Huu Phuc – President of University Of Foreign Language Studies – The University Of Da Nang; Representatives of leaders and staff of three universities.
The seminar was also attended by the directors of Military Science Academy, Vietnam Military Medical Academy, the People’s Police Academy, Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, Hanoi National University of Education, member universities of VNU, representatives of the local and regional training and research units.
In his opening remark, Dr. Do Tuan Minh expressed his gratitude towards the enthusiastic participation and support of scientists. He also encouraged scholars to continue to devote their efforts and contribute more high-quality and valuable articles for subsequent seminars. The next upcoming seminar would be “research and teaching of native language, foreign languages and regional studies in the integration period” also co-organized by the three universities on July 28th, 2017 at University of Foreign Language Studies – The University of Da Nang.
Representative of the Board of Directors of VNU, Prof. Nguyen Huu Duc highly appreciated the efforts of ULIS-VNU in preparing and organizing the national seminar in 2017. The VNU’s Vice President believed that ULIS has been a well-qualified university with top scientists in studying and teaching foreign languages, languages and international studies in Vietnam. He also suggested that apart from the cooperation in training and co-ordination of organizing scientific conferences, seminars, general forums, scientific conferences for cadres, graduate students, postgraduate students and students, the three foreign language universities also need to promote common research topics in languages as well as the development and implementation of key scientific research topics, strengthen international publicity and empower the position and the influence of the Journal of Foreign Studies.
At the plenary session, three reports were presented: “National High School Examination and Admission to Higher Education in English 2016: A Challenge to the Purpose of Foreign Language Education at high schools in Vietnam in the context of integration and globalization “of professor Hoang Van Van, “Enhancing professional proficiency for English teachers in Vietnam” by Assoc. Prof. Truong Vien and “An Analysis of certain characteristics of teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language for foreigners in international schools, university of foreign language studies – the university of Danang” of by Assoc. Prof. Luu Quy Khuong.
In the seminar, more than 60 reports were presented at 8 traditional subcommittees and 1 poster subcommittee. Before that, Organization Board had received in total 110 reports from researchers, educators and executives from the three foreign language universities, executives from many other universities such as Can Tho College, Dak Lak University of Pedagogy, Tay Nguyen University, Cuu Long University, Sai Gon University, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh University of Pedagogy, Quang Binh University, Haiphong University Of Medicine and Pharmacy, Tay Bac University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ha Long University, Vietnam National University of Agriculture…
The diverse content of the reports focused on linguistics, foreign language and international study teaching – common topics appearing throughout this annual national scientific seminar. One special thing was that many reports offer new contents comparing to previous seminars, such as teaching Vietnamese to Laos students at Tay Bac University, proficiency in using Vietnamese of Chinese youth living in Ho Chi Minh City, or comparing Vietnamese and Scotch. International Studies also received more diverse reports this year, for example the picture of Islam in Africa, the influence of Korean’s personality traits on linguistic communication or moral values of Russian. Some current affair topics had been analyzed and presented in some reports, such as “What can Vietnam National University 2020 project learn from Asian experience scheme” by Assoc. Prof. Le Van Canh, “Assessing college and university entrance examination of English in 2016” by Prof. Hoang Van Van – the exam considered as a challenge to the foreign language teaching targets in Vietnam high school in the context of integration and globalization.
All of the reports were assessed and selected by Evaluation Board and after being edited by the authors according to the Board’s suggestions, some of the reports were nominated by the Board to be printed in Journal of Foreign Studies and 65 reports were printed in the Proceeding.
During the presentation at subcommittees, all delegates manifested careful and enthusiastic preparations in their topics. All reports had successfully captured the audience’s attention. All chairmen of subcommittees highly appreciated the quality of the content, the variety of topics as well as dynamic discussions on each report.
Addressing at the closing session, Vice-president Nguyen Xuan Long expressed his gratitude towards the Organization Board and participated delegates contributing to the success of the seminar. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Long hoped that the next seminar in 2018 would continue to receive supports from teaching staff.
