As part of its legal responsibility to ensure the safety of its staff and students at school, ULIS had taken a lot of security measures and is still in the process of improving the security systems.

Similar to many other schools and universities, ULIS faces a dilemma in its security arrangements. On the one hand, they wish to be open and welcoming places for parents, pupils, and the local community. On the other hand, staff and pupils must be able to work in and learn in a safe and secure environment. Although there are still some shortcomings, ULIS staff and teachers still try to make changes and develop the school’s security system.

Security measures are taken by ULIS

Mr. Nguyễn Văn Đoàn, Deputy Head of Politics and Student Affairs Office, University of Languages and International Studies – VNU, said: “Every year, ULIS usually develops a plan to ensure security and safety for staff and students. There will be specific general plans for the whole year and for special holidays such as April 30/4-1/5, Lunar New Year, or 2/9. We also hope that students will pay more attention to this plan because to ensure security, it requires the cooperation of staff and students.”

ULIS always focuses on ensuring the security of staff and students, especially through practical actions that take place every day at this university. The most obvious thing is that the force of the security team is always on duty at the posts inside and outside the school gate. In addition to security control, the task of the security team is also to navigate traffic during rush hours to ensure the safety of students on the way to class. In particular, ULIS also established a “junior” security group by the students themselves to assist the main team. This is a manifestation of the cooperation between staff and students to improve the university’s security quality.

As a foreign language teaching and learning school, the organization of large workshops and events is very frequent. During the organization of such large-scale and crowded events, in addition to the school’s security team, there is also the support of police officers from the ward police department of Dich Vong Hau. That is why all school events always take place extremely successfully and safely.

Security deficiencies

However, the security system of ULIS still has some shortcomings in assuring the safety of students and lectures. Since Ulis is located at the crossroad connecting with many other universities such as HNUE and VNU Hanoi-UET, along with only 4 guards in each shift, it is arduous for them to control the number of students and the parents taking their children to school. 

Besides, the lecture halls allow everyone to freely enter without any form of identity checking. This creates an opportunity for bad guys to mingle with students and have negative behaviors. The number of guards is also very small or not available, they are often concentrated in block A4. Also, students studying late in the evening must pass through areas that lack light and are sparse such as Block B2, and B3. So when something unwanted happens, it will be difficult to stop or arrest the culprit in time.

ULIS attempts to make security better

Currently, ULIS teachers and staff have tried their best to improve the security system to ensure the safety of students as well as staff and lecturers. “We will strengthen the “junior” security team combining with the guard team to ensure the security of students as well as prevent unwanted situations from happening unexpectedly.” Mr. Nguyễn Văn Đoàn said

It cannot be denied that in addition to ensuring the quality of teaching and learning, other factors such as security, health care, and entertainment are always concerned by the school. Clearly, ULIS has made a lot of efforts and changes clearly in ensure security for staff and students. In the future, ULIS will try to perfect itself to become a desirable university for many generations of students nationwide.
